NEW
LIFE
DISCIPLESHIP &
ADDICTION
RECOVERY
PROGRAM
In 1996, with the introduction of a new Director at the Rescue Mission, Mr. Tony Chung, the Mission took a new step towards dealing with the problem of homelessness. Tony felt a real desire to start a discipleship program to help men coming off the street who wanted to learn about the Lord and walk closer with Him. The staff of the Rescue Mission knew that the leading cause of people being homeless was an addiction to drugs or alcohol. They wanted the program to allow men enough time to change habits and behaviors they had acquired over the years. In July of 1996, the New Life Discipleship and Recovery Program started.
The purpose of the 12-18 month New Life Program is to provide substance abuse recovery services to chemically dependent/alcoholic individuals in a supportive, drug-free environment so that they may begin to develop and implement long-range recovery plans. The program lasts from one to two years, depending on the needs of each program member, and involves one-on-one discipleship, classes, and Bible study among other tools to help every member tailor the program to their needs. The New Life Program offers life-skills training, education, employment preparedness, vocational training, and job placement services. The Program is designed for homeless individuals or individuals who show an interest in changing their lifestyle (overcoming addiction, obtaining an education, etc.) NLP participants have little to no income when they enter the program. Many of the women who enroll in NLP have fled situations of domestic violence and, upon entry into the program, do not have the financial means to independently support themselves or their children.
By attaining realistic goals at each level of the phased program, the individual will learn the principals of the Christian faith, good work ethic, realize an increase in self-esteem, and be motivated to progress to the next level. By understanding the nature of addiction and the relapse process, he/she will learn to stay sober. The secondary purpose of this program is to provide these same opportunities to individuals who are homeless due to other circumstances, and to provide the opportunity, upon graduation, for education, career training, job placement and follow up support so that graduates can be sober, responsible, contributing members of the community.
In 2008, 19 men and women have graduated from NLP and moved into the community as productive, self-sufficient citizens, and 32 men and women found and sustained full-time employment. In the past year, 10 individuals received their GEDs, and two women graduated from college (one with an Associate of Arts degree and one with Certified Nursing Assistant accreditation). Over the past five years, NLP has helped 99 formerly homeless men and women rise above dependence on drugs, crime, and welfare.
If you or someone you know is ready to take this step in changing your life, don't hesitate to call to talk to someone about the program. Women can call Tina at City Light Home for Women and Childrenat 368-9901, and men can call Mike at the Lighthouse at 461-5030 or the River of Life at 389-9840, ext. 15 to talk to Rocky.
